Victrola Mouth by Kevin Pittman

Kevin Pittman, a versatile singer/songwriter and guitar player from the Northern Neck of Virginia, is showing a different side in this new independent release. After a stint in Los Angeles to pitch the major labels, he returned to Virginia and refocused his writing efforts around deeper influences from 60’s and 70’s soul singers. He found sanctuary and a new focus to guide his songwriting, spurred by work in a soul-influenced R&B club band. After his father’s passing in 2017, he started work on new songs, recording all vocals and instruments with only help from long-time collaborator and childhood friend Kim Haynie on drums. A few songs were polished to completion, and along with Kim’s encouragement, the two forged ahead to co-produce the album.

Comfortable with many genres, Kevin’s song library reflects, and has reflected for years, a space existing between pop, rock, soul and R&B. Think Philly soul ala Daryl Hall meets 70’s era Keith Richards, add a little Smoky Robinson then sprinkle in some Isley Brothers and O’Jays on top. Although this effort doesn’t pretend to be a soul/R&B album, those influences are present and come from an obviously sincere place.

The collection spans the punchy playfulness of “Just a Show-Off”, the subtle funk and guitar interplay on “Start Where U Stand”, the beautiful piano backed harmonies/ falsetto of “It Takes All Day” and the gentle simplicity of the coda, “Easy Bell”.

Victrola Mouth has been well received, finding a global audience with over 40,000 digital streams and added by playlist owners and Spotify curators to over 100 playlists. The work has started on a new album planned for 2022 release. Kevin has also touched over 100,000 people over social media and the response has been terrific.
