Through Glass is the result of a deeply collaborative and cross-continental experiment between Japanese electroacoustic composer Kazuya Ishigami and American multidisciplinary artist Max Devereaux. Rooted in contrasting yet complementary approaches, the project unfolds as a dialogue between structured sound design and spontaneous sonic exploration.
The process began with Kazuya Ishigami, who created a series of intricate sound materials, merging electroacoustic textures, noise fragments, and ambient field recordings. These materials were then sent to Max Devereaux, who layered, reinterpreted, and expanded upon them through improvisation, using field recordings, found objects, contact microphones, and modular synthesizers. Max's additions reflect his tactile and often textural approach, combining environmental sounds and lo-fi textures with gestures that evoke both intimacy and sweeping activity.
The recordings passed once more into Ishigami's hands, where he carefully deconstructed and reassembled the sound elements into finished compositions. His final edits shaped the album into a cohesive whole, blending raw improvisation with composed electroacoustic precision. He also oversaw the mastering process.
The album’s title was chosen by Devereaux, reflecting a feeling he has carried for much of his life as an artist, especially one working within the avant-garde. To him, creating art often feels like living behind glass: present but removed, able to observe and reflect the world with clarity, yet never fully immersed in it. This invisible barrier separates the artist from society, allowing vision without contact, insight without belonging. The music on the album, with its delicate, translucent textures and fleeting glimpses of human presence, seemed to embody this sensation perfectly, like watching life unfold just beyond reach.
About the Artists:
KAZUYA ISHIGAMI (b. 1972, Osaka, Japan) is a composer, sound designer, performer, and engineer working across electroacoustic, acousmatic, post-acousmatic, ambient, and noise disciplines. Ishigami began manipulating tape recorders and assembling collage works as a child. Since 1992, he has released works under the alias Daruin, and in 1995 became a core member of the noise unit Billy?. Ishigami’s music has been performed and exhibited at ICMC, ISCM, FUTURA, MUSLAB, WDR, and more. He runs the experimental label NEUS-318 and OMODARU. One of Ishigami's central themes is “the memory of sound.”Every recorded sound inevitably carries memory, and this is equally true for synthesized sounds. To edit or process sound is to rewrite that memory — and in doing so, to alter the past itself.

MAX DEVEREAUX (b. 1994) is a sound artist, filmmaker, painter, and guitarist whose work spans experimental improvisation, country/western ballads, outsider film, and abstract visual art. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and self-taught in both music and the arts, Devereaux forged his path through obsessive study and relentless creation —outside of academia, through libraries, museums, record stores, and alternative venues. He has released albums with record labels based in Japan, South Korea, Canada, Belgium, Poland and the UK. In 2024, he toured Japan for the first time and held a solo painting exhibition at M.A.P. Gallery in Tokyo's Koenji district. His experimental films are also regularly shown in Japan at festivals and multi-media events. His intuitive approach draws on free improvisation, lo-fi aesthetics, and cross-media storytelling, making him a unique presence in the American experimental landscape.
