LA Silhouettes by Kanako Yamamoto
This EP featrues Guzheng - the first instrument I grew up playing. I started at 4 years old, and used to spend 8 hours a day playing mostly Communist songs. Back then, music wasn’t freedom or creation, it was about brilliance and competition. I wasn’t allowed to compose or explore my own voice through it, so after I won the national title in China, I walked away from it and didn’t touch it for 10 years.
It wasn’t until I picked up the guitar that I realised Guzheng had never truly left me. A lot of you have asked me about my tunings and how I compose on guitar, it’s actually all tied to Guzheng. Guitar became a space for me to teach myself and experiment until I began to carve out a sound that felt truly mine, and I’m glad I found a way to bring it back to Guzheng.
LA Silhouettes is an EP that brings this journey full circle. It captures the spirit of rediscovering the simplicity and joy that first drew me to music.
