Born in Richmond, California to a gospel musician mother, Brown was introduced to music in the womb, where she says he would kick to the beat. He started drumming at two years-old in church and began his formal jazz education at 10. "I'm a black man living in a dark time. My experiences through that color [NYEUSI = BLACK] always come up rooted in blackness."
