Iterate by Justin Ashworth with Therese Keogh

Iterate was developed in collaboration with Therese Keogh for her exhibition "A Well Revisited", at Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz. The compositions use field recordings made by Keogh at Ergersheimer Experimente in 2017, an experimental archaeology workshop held annually in the town of Ergersheim.

The field recordings document Keogh's time exploring the excavation of an Early Neolithic water well from the Linearbandkeramik. Specifically, the work builds on the repetitive sound of a stone adze striking wood, in a performative re-staging of the construction of these ancient structures.

This process of reiteration, and re-performing informed my approach to the work. Performing a series of improvisations with different sound modules and synth patches, each iteration smears, stretches, and distorts the reality of the sounds until like the well, they are lost in the decay and noise.

In listening, perhaps something new can be excavated.
