February Thaw from Crystal Sky by Julie Lyon

The first time Jack DeSalvo shared one of his compositions with me and suggested that I write lyrics so that I could sing it, it took me 2 years to write the lyrics. Not because the piece was so difficult, but from my own reticence. Once I had penned those lyrics I found that it opened the door to writing more. My recording Moonflower is the earliest example of this.The process of writing lyrics to Jack’s music led to the exploration of other composers like Chris Forbes and Matt Lavelle. I find the process of writing lyrics not unlike improvising. I take inspiration from the melody, the rhythm of the melody and at times the title of the composition. For me the music of Jack DeSalvo and Chris Forbes put words in my head and the lyrics flowed easily. Crystal Sky is a continuation of my exploration of putting words to music, an exploration that I hope continues.
