atomic by Josh Sager

“atomic” is Josh Sager’s fourth release as an ambient artist. His previous release “prometheus” was an hour long composition. With “atomic” Josh set out to take the opposite approach - a collection of short form songs. He established some criteria for the writing and production process:

1. Songs should be no longer than four minutes. This is a direct departure from his third release “prometheus” which is a single composition clocking in at over one hour.

2. Josh will do all of the mixing and mastering himself, as a learning process.

3. Writing, recording, mixing, and mastering for each song should take no more than two working sessions.

These constraints actually made the songwriting process easier in many ways; not lingering on minute details, simpler song structure with less parts, going with the feeling of the songs more so than the intellectual processes, mixing more intuitively, and starting on the journey of learning how to master a recording. It was a very cathartic experience.

As a result, seventeen songs were written, ranging in style from ethereal and floating ambient soundscapes, to generative music improvisations, to dystopian future soundtracks.

Josh Sager is a cinematic dark ambient electronica musician and aspiring film and game composer. Employing modular and software synths, fretless guitar and guitar effects, tape loops, generative music concepts, and field recordings, he is drawn to writing atmospheric, moody, highly-textured soundscapes.
