Badass Dove from FAWM 2025 by Johnny Wallflower

the grackles always sit in the trees at brunch
waiting for a chance to swoop on down
soon as somebody looks away from their lunch
they drop from the branches and go to town

until the badass dove shows up
and shakes her head as she looks around
says "what the hell do you think you're doing?"

the dove plops down in the middle of the bus tray
takes a sniff of the eggs and bread
the grackles step back 'cause they know that they must pay
attention if they don't wanna end up dead

the dove just nods and she digs right in
she's well-muscled, not overfed
says "thanks, boys, this bacon looks tasty"

now the grackles are big and black and shiny
much more scary than the dove, you'd think
they killed a crow once, but she's killed ninety
turned their feathers into india ink

they wait their turn, and they're glad to do it
the dove she smiles and she gives 'em a wink
says "y'all sure know how to act genteel"

her boyfriend comes and they share a bagel
they choose their toppings from the farrago
there ain't no lox, 'cause they've never been able
to find good nova here in Mexico

then she's done and she preens a bit
takes off and flies across the patio
says "you boys enjoy your breakfast!"
