Starvation, Live! by John Moran Trio

// I consider myself beyond blessed to have meaningful and deep relationships with John Patrick Moran II. Personal, Familial, Professional. Laughter and tears in equal part have been present throughout my totally blissed out experience in closeness with John beginning in 2021 when we first played music together. At the time, I did not expect that encounter to blossom into one of the most paramount friendships/collaborations I could have ever hoped for. This relationship has led me to paths and places I could not have fathomed arriving to. A collaborator I will work endlessly to have in proximity to me for as long as I can.

When I first heard music that John made in private on his own, it felt like he had been keeping a secret from me. I felt so many things. I was equally shocked, confused, and elated. I have a memory of being in my car listening to “Patrick” released on his Instagram on June 12th, 2023 and I was laughing uncontrollably. Totally brilliant. John proceeded to drop new music at a pretty insane rate that summer and I was wide eyed, shaking my head at each new piece revealing itself more inventive, bizarre and catchier than the last.

In “Starvation, Live!”, Johnny’s done it again. With Will McGoran on guitar and Maliq Wynn on drums, the record is a 26 minute long bull fight with John on electric bass and singing as the red cloth. With a one-hour rehearsal before what would be the trio’s first gig documented on this record, Maliq and Will do anything but follow John. The three navigate the music with urgency as if their life depends on it. Will’s playing guitar like he’s making a fucking cocktail at .25 speed. It sounds like Maliq has had full access to every single event and piece of art that has influenced John to this day. I have not heard chemistry like this on what was ultimately a somewhat last-minute gig.

While all members contribute tactfully and tastefully to the end result, John’s curation, vision, and myriad of ideas are carved onto all four walls. One of music’s brightest minds communicating with a vigor and desperation that as a fan and listener of music, my ears daydream to encounter more often. I am fed and I am going to bed thinking about breakfast. //
