I was walking home at midnight
Through the darkness and the gloom
There was no comfort in the street lights
No beauty in the moon

Then he stepped out of the shadows
And he stared into my soul
And he asked without a question

We walked on for a while
Tears masked now by the rain
And I saw the moon return
And found the beauty once again

Something new and yet familiar
Walking silent by my side
With his coat of deepest black
And his gleaming, soulful eyes

When the black dog comes to call
