Phobia by Jesse Burns

“Phobia started in mid December. It was an idea suggested to me by someone else and I decided to try it out and ending up liking my written. “Thanatophobia” was recorded first and was based on an old finished song I had but which I never released. I ended up liking the newer version more. Fun fact about the guitar solos on this it’s actually two different guitars the first solo is a Fender VG but during a take of the second solo I snapped a string so I grabbed my Starcaster (not a typo) to do the second solo. I then recorded “Thalassophobia” which came from me just messing around on a Yamaha Arius YDP-103. The drum sounds were heavily inspired by the drums heard on Peter Gabriel’s album Up. “Neophobia” was recorded next. It’s heavily inspired by “Mama” by Genesis. The horn section is MIDI specifically Rotary by Orchestra Instruments. The noise at the beginning is actually a slowed and reversed Fender VG guitar (Also done on “Thalassophobia” but was a Fender Starcaster with a Strat body this was also pitched down an octave). “Cosmophobia” was recorded next its also based on an old track inspired “Neptune the Mystic” by Gustav Holst. It had a whole intro but I scrapped it deeming it too plagiaristic. The same technique I used on the drums on “Thalassophobia” were used here too. “Phasmophobia” was recorded next. Its mainly comprised of loops and was heavily inspired by NIN tracks. I wish I shortened the ending as I find it annoying and is my only gripe about my own record. “Philophobia” was heavily inspired by ELO but ended up sounding more like The Alan Parsons Project. It’s comprised of two songs really. The one that makes up the majority of the song is a cut track from a private album that might get released later. The bridge is also a cut track that I kept trying to rework but I ended up giving up on it using it as a bridge. “Cosmophobia” was recorded for the same private album. It was originally entitled “Give Me a Reason” and then later renamed to “Falling” but ended up being cut because I didn’t have time to finish it. I later relistened to the instrumental and thought that it was good. I changed nothing on it only adding vocals. The reverbed guitar was inspired by Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell”. This is also my favorite song on this album. “Anthrophobia” is a nice little track. It’s basically my attempt at a song that plays a role like “Hurt” does on the downward spiral or “The Drop” on Peter Gabriel’s Up. Only thing is I end up doing a really corny Roger Waters impression towards the end. I like the track though. The intro was also inspired by NIN with the machine sounds. The sample that leads into this song is actually a recurring effect I use from an old song I wrote. I might release it down the road but expect to see it on future releases as its quite important. And because I am a massive Weird Al Yankovic fan I used an Accordion. Lastly my close friend Sammie Reeher did a wonderful job on vocals for both “Cosmophobia” and “Thalassophobia” and I thank her for that as I couldn’t sing either song too well.”- Jesse Burns
