I had this song for a long time before coming into the studio. The tracking of it was really basic. I just huddled everyone together and said something like, "Al Green. Motown. Groove. Easy....." And we cut it and that was it.
I had not really performed this song much before recording because I didn't have the bridge lyrics down quite yet. But I finished them up just upon tracking and it gave me the feeling that the song was complete. Leave it up to the studio to get you to finish some work......
Slip Away has also become a fan favorite and we played it numerous times on our tours across the U.S. I always like playing songs where the lyrics really hit me. This song doesn't really do that for me like others, but the groove and feel live usually push me past that feeling.
In hindsight, I wish I could have given the recording a little bit more of a vintage vibe, but overall, I think it turned out alright.
