À Vancouver by James N Murray

À Vancouver is an intriguing soundtrack for the experimental short film of the same name that explores parallel histories of a father and son.

The musical work on À Vancouver began with longer tracks created from synths, circuits and samples - electro-magnetic field recordings, VHS tapes, ambient recordings done around Murray's home city of Chicago - that were later edited in collaboration with the filmmaker. The tracks went through a number of iterations and negotiations - referencing and moving between the moods, ideas, memories and concepts of the film. The recording is also interspersed with dialogue from the film that gives it an emotional footing but also provides context and movement between compositions.

The resulting piece is a beautiful ambient album that is a perfect complement to the film, but also a powerful statement on its own.
