Monsters by James Gordon
Monsters was written for the final year of my degree and the theme that connects the songs on it is one of classic horror film/fiction tropes. Style-wise, the songs are all over the map: from a folky sea-shanty to full-on, guitar-driven metal. There's a focus on vocal harmony and strong hooks in the melodies, but also on evoking an atmosphere that brings to mind the monster in question.

Track 1: Combines sea-shanties, Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, the song tells the tale of a murderous crew and the vengeance of an old god.
Track 2: A visceral tale told from the point-of-view of a Jack the Ripper-esque killer in Victorian London, with touches of Jekyll & Hyde and Bloodborne.
Track 3: An unsettling love song / upbeat folky acoustic number, written from the pov of an ancient, obsessive, vampiric monster.
Track 4: A heavy, guitar-driven metal song about Frankenstein's monster and his search for an identity.
Track 5: A melancholic acoustic number about losing the things that make us who we are... and zombies.

He has a PhD in music composition from Nottingham University.
