Vastitas Borealis by Jakub Gucik

Vastitas Borealis—Latin for ‘northern waste.’ Stretching across the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere of Mars, with an average altitude of approximately 2.75 miles below the mean radius of the planet, it is one of the vastest depressions in the Solar System. Dunes and hills rise up above its surface, formed by crushing and left from craters, respectively. The highest point within Vastitas Borealis is the extinct volcano Olympus Mons; reaching some 72 thousand feet above the baseline, it is the tallest mountain in all of our planetary system. In Vastitas Borealis, spectacular sandstorms can be admired, as well as the rising and setting of the Sun and the planet’s two moons: Deimos and Phobos. In the summer, methane is released from the globe’s surface, producing enormous, wispy clouds of carbon dioxide which conceal the peak of the mighty volcano.
