William was with me, when I was young
Listening to stories of what he’s done
Strange places from the past and people gone away
Adventures in a land so different from today

William, be with me
William, they’re calling you

Strange jobs for adults, some friend some foe
Gamekeeper, maid and gardener, finished long ago
Taking refuge in the old barn so they wouldn’t know
Humbugs and liquorice water, catapult and bow

William, come back here
William has no fear

What is a box room or an Eton suit?
Have you seen a video or a Kiwi fruit?
Did you really eat a bullseye? Try a pizza instead
Someone came to dinner, with soapy lemons was fed

We can have adventures in a simpler time
Empty lanes and fields, we will be just fine
William and Jumble, make yourselves at home
Douglas and Ginger, Henry and Joan

Thank you for being with me when I was a boy
When I read your stories, I was filled with joy
And when I was a man I read them all again
And I wonder did you meet Huckleberry Finn?
I read them to my children and they asked for more
Just like I asked my Dad, all those years before
