Designed by Jay Miner, Atari's "Television Interface Adapter" chip doesn't just handle sound, it's also the video display for the Atari 2600, and it does joystick/paddle handling as well. There are 16 different "instruments" which are all permutations of squarewaves and whitenoise. Because of the way the chip calculates frequency, and because the bit depth of the frequency is so low, basically every "note" fails to line up with an actual piano note.
