Even before he started playing his music live, it has been a compositional trademark of EMERGE to base his tracks (or even whole albums) on sounds from one particular source. Over more than a decade of extensive live performances, this approach has evolved - now each of the three samplers EMERGE uses onstage can be a different instrument, depending on the samples it contains, often from wildly different sources and contexts. With the four-part dark ambient suite "observe", he returns to the "one source only" approach, but with a difference.
As the artist name "EMERGE plays Bad Girl" implies, all the source sounds used in the composition were supplied by Florence-based Italian sound artist, electronic musician, and bass player Bad Girl, yet assembled by EMERGE. "Observe" can be considered a co-composition as well as a remix, depending on the perspective one wants to take. As a set of textures crafted by Bad Girl yet stored on EMERGE's samplers for repeated re-workings in live concerts, it is also a toolkit, an instrument, or an 'open artwork' (Umberto Eco). As such, it is a prototype for similar collaborations by EMERGE with other artists supplying sounds to him.

EMERGE is inspired by the minimalist traditions of experimentalism and non-academic noise music, focusing on generating sound structures intended to make atmospheres emerge that are open to each listener’s own interpretation.
The choice of sound sources used is usually very limited. In most cases only rudiments of the original sounds are recognizable due to various treatments.
