Francesco Serra (Cagliari, 1980) is a self-taught guitarist living and working in Bologna.
His research focuses on identifying performance practices aimed at extending the timbre qualities of the guitar and emphasising the evocative potential of sound.
Throughout his musical journey, particularly in the three albums released between 2008 and 2019 under his solo project Trees of Mint (Micro Meadow, Trees of Mint, and NW, released by Here I Stay and Trovarobato Parade), he has progressively deconstructed the song form through sound experimentation, making the physical phenomenon of sound and its interactions with the performance space the focus of his exploration.
His previous album, Guest Room (i dischi di angelica 2022), born of a residency project promoted by AngelicA | Centro di Ricerca Musicale, was actually structured as a form of dialogue between the signals generated by the minimal electro acoustic setup prepared by the musician (electric guitar, two amplifiers, three snare drums, and loop machine) and the physical and emotional responses of the unique sound architecture of Teatro San Leonardo (a former three-nave church) that hosted him for a month during the pandemic.
Personal, his new release for the Angelica label, continues the musician's “reductionist” and abstract approach with an even greater essential rigour. Here the initial setup is acoustic: a sound flow beginning with sparse, exploratory phrases of acoustic guitar that, after a temporary completeness found in movement three, starts falling apart in the encounter with the resonances of a drum snare in movement four, eventually dissolving into a completely different “soundscape” (Sardinia, Serra's birthplace): a long field recording of distant night echoes, on which the guitar returns only at the end, now extended in the drone of the e-bow.
As Gaspare Caliri writes in the liner notes, Personal indeed confirms (after NW and Guest Room) Serra's work as a tendency towards eclipsing authorship “starting from the separation of gesture and acoustic result, which (...) undermines the iconicity of the touch of the guitar, fuelling a cognitive dissonance around the performance.”
It represents a tension towards the free objectivity of sound in its creation (essentially, an idea of non-reductive subjectivity that draws from complexity, “multiple dialectics of space and time, pre and post-individual”), whose aim is to let “the work’s purpose flow, above that of those producing it or listening to it.”

La sua ricerca si focalizza sull’individuazione di pratiche performative volte a estendere le qualità timbriche della chitarra come strumento, e ad enfatizzare il potenziale evocativo del suono.
Nel suo percorso musicale, in particolare nei tre album pubblicati tra 2008 e 2019 con il suo progetto solista Trees of Mint (Micro Meadow, Trees of Mint e NW, su Here I Stay e Trovarobato Parade), ha decostruito progressivamente la forma canzone attraverso la sperimentazione sonora, facendo del fenomeno fisico del suono nelle sue interazioni con lo spazio performativo uno dei fulcri della propria ricerca.
Di fatto, il suo precedente album Guest Room (i dischi di angelica 2022), frutto di un progetto di residenza prodotto da AngelicA | Centro di Ricerca Musicale, si strutturava come un vero e proprio dialogo tra i segnali generati dal set elettroacustico minimale approntato dal musicista (chitarra elettrica, due amplificatori, tre rullanti, loop machine), ed i responsi fisico-emozionali della peculiare architettura sonora del Teatro San Leonardo (una ex-chiesa a tre navate) che lo ha ospitato per un mese durante il periodo della pandemia.
Personal, nuova uscita per l’etichetta di Angelica, prosegue la vena “riduzionista” e di astrazione del musicista con un rigore ancora più essenziale. Il setting di partenza è qui acustico: un flusso sonoro che inizia da fraseggi scarni, esplorativi di chitarra acustica, e che dopo una temporanea compiutezza trovata nel movimento III, si sfaldano nell’incontro con le risonanze di un rullante da batteria nel quarto, per poi dissolversi in un’ “ambiente sonoro” totalmente diverso (la Sardegna da cui Serra è originario): un lungo field recording di distanti echi notturni, sui quali torna solo alla fine la chitarra, ora estesa nel drone dell’e-bow.
Come scrive Gaspare Caliri nelle note di copertina, Personal conferma quindi (dopo NW e Guest Room), l’opera di Serra come una tendenza verso la sottrazione dell’autorialità “a partire dalla separazione tra gesto e risultato acustico, che (...) scalfisce l’iconicità del tocco sulla chitarra, alimentando una dissonanza cognitiva attorno alla performance”.
Una tensione verso la libera oggettività del suono nel suo farsi (in realtà, semplicemente un’idea di soggettività non riduttiva ma che si nutre di complessità, di “dialettiche molteplici di tempo e spazio, pre- e post-individuali”), il cui obiettivo è “lasciare che sgorghi l’intenzione dell’opera, sopra a quella di chi la produce e di chi l’ascolta”.
