Everyone experiences those seasons in life where you wonder if you'll be able to get by. That could be financially, physically, spiritually, but whatever it may be, you can get through it. Jireh is a Hebrew word that means, "to provide" or "The Lord our provider".
After my dad got out of jail and my mom was cured of her cancer, we moved around a lot. My dad was an alcoholic, not even a functioning alcoholic; he wanted to be smashed all the time. The idea was to find a "fresh start". Each time, hoping this would be it, this is the time things get better. But every time he would go back to drinking and lose his job. My mom couldn't work and so we went through many years of surviving on the bare minimum. 10 cent ramen noodle packs, spaghetti and hotdogs were always on the menu and I remember my mom always worrying if we would be able to have enough.
I remember at one point, the house we were renting caught fire and we ended up moving to a one bedroom apartment. 4 people cramped inside but God always provided a roof over our heads. He always provided food to eat, a place to sleep. Sometimes we have to reshape our definition of "enough" especially as Americans. In a world where a 7 year old hasn't eaten in a week and lives in a grass hut, I feel grateful that I woke up in a warm building where I could open up that 10 cent ramen noodle pack and feed myself.
We go through these seasons so that we will lean on God and learn the most valuable thing we can, that it is GOD Himself that is enough. Food, clothing, none of that matters. It's so hard to know this truth because we have been programed to think that we have to have that Gucci shirt, Louis V bag and Starbucks drink to be cool or to be accepted. Those things have become our idols but we must learn that God is our provider and HE is enough.
Matthew 6:33
Psalms 145:14-15
Romans 5:8
The first two scriptures are some of my favorites when claiming the promises of God to always provide. You might also be encouraged by the story of Abraham where Jireh is first mentioned in Genesis. Romans 5:8 is my absolute favorite for showing how God provides. "God showed His great love for us by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners" No matter what we think we need, the one thing we need more than anything else is a savior and that savior is in Jesus Christ. He provided a way to God Himself, while we choose sin and to separate from God, He provided a way for us to connect. It's God's gift to all mankind, free to be accepted. You don't have to live in sin, you can live in His promise. You don't have to live on your own, you can live with the hope of Jesus. You don't have to die, for God has provided life through Jesus. Be encouraged that everything you need, God can provide for you. Let Him be your focus and see that He is Jireh.
