A lot of people will go through life feeling like they don't need to be saved. For many people, it's only the moments in life like, near death experiences, sickness, disease, poverty and extreme lows that open our hearts for the need of a savior. It's everyone's desire to live life as comfortable as possible. Living a life with none of those things would be amazing but when we have a life like that, we succumb to the lie that we don't need saving. This is especially true in America. We have built a life where everything I need, I can take care of myself. If I'm sick, I turn to a doctor. If I'm broke, I turn to the government. If I'm lonely, there's a lot of choices I can turn to. So for a lot of first world people the question is, "why do I need a savior"?
Christ is both a name and a title. Everyone knows the name, but the title comes from the prophetic coming of a messiah mentioned throughout the old testament. As early as Genesis 3:15, and throughout the entire old testament we get a build up, a peak of God's plan to save us through the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
I was one that tried to turn to myself for everything, mostly because I always had too. I had to grow up faster than most kids and take on responsibilities of an adult. At 10-15 years old I stayed up all hours of the night protecting my mom from an alcoholic and abusive father. I worried about money and bills getting paid. I tried to be there for my mom emotionally and do what I could to hold the family together. After my dad died, I had an explosion of emotions that I didn't know how to handle and so I turned to myself. I tried to bury them and create a happy, fun life for myself by turning to drugs, alcohol and sex.
The thing is, when we turn to the world, when we turn to ourselves, we usually find that we're still empty, we still feel like something is missing. That's because there's a solid truth, we DO NEED saving. Not only is there an enemy out there who wants to destroy you, we are by nature, self destructive. Between the two, we don't stand much of a chance.
But the good news is, we are living in the best time ever. We aren't waiting for a messiah to come and save us. He has already come, paid the price and invites every single one of us to live a life with Him. God reached down from Heaven, and in Jesus created a hand that stretches toward us, asking us to take hold. He wants to pull us out of the fire, pull us out of the water we're drowning in, pull us out of the destruction and devastation of our lives. All we have to do is take His hand. For those of us who have lived lives in the fire and experienced drowning, it's a little easier to see the hand reaching out for us. But for some, they are living a life in quick sand, they don't feel or see any danger or need for saving. No matter your situation, know that Christ is reaching out for you.
