By Chance by Hverheij
As the story goes:
Having lost their way through dark swirling mists of an untimely nocturnal sojourn, some weary travelers trudged through a desolate forest, unsure of finding their way out or of finding any refuge if they couldn't. What were they to do? On and on, they kept moving forward. There was no trail to follow and since they could barely see ahead they often stumbled. Even more so, they cursed their sorry lot. Then, by chance, they spied in the distance what appeared to be a deserted homestead. Perhaps fortune was with these travelers after all, for even though there were no lights illuminating their surroundings, a pale moonlight overhead confirmed that the existence of the building was very real. As it cast its eerie shadows upon them, they crept towards the door in the entryway and turned its handle with care, hoping for the best. After all, how could they know what they were walking into or what could be lurking behind the many shifting reflections? By chance, the door creaked slowly wide and, to great relief, they gained sure entry. What luck! But was it really only mere chance? And was it really safe for them to enter that dark abode? As the weary travelers glanced about nervously, ominous shadows loomed closer. They were about to find out...
This was the premise for the album - a short foray into horror-mystery. Think of supernatural horror, zombie apocalypse or end-of-world survival drama. Playing to a total length of about 19 minutes, 'By Chance' presents various tone colorations, contrasts and hybrid shifts to capture the mood through an instrumental soundtrack. The result is part electronic, part acoustic in sound. Hence, like its premise, a bit unexpected.
