Говорят, что по ночам Ла Йорона похищает детей, принимая их за своих утонувших дочерей. The Legend of La Llorona is a famous Mexican folk legend about the ghost of a weeping woman. Stories about her have many variations, but the basic plot is usually this: long ago there lived a beautiful woman from a poor family. She married a rich man and bore him two children. But her husband began to neglect her and treat her badly. In a fit of desperation, the woman drowned her children in the river. Realizing what she had done, the woman committed suicide by throwing herself into the same river. Since then, the woman’s unconquered spirit, called La Llorona (The Mourner), has wandered by rivers and lakes, weeping and wailing “¡Ay, mis hijos!” (Oh, my children!). La Jorona is said to kidnap children at night, mistaking them for her drowned daughters. The legend is used to frighten disobedient children, warning that La Llorona will come for them if they disobey their parents. The origins of the legend can be traced back to Aztec mythology about the goddess Sihuacoatl. After the colonization of Mexico, the image was transformed under the influence of Christianity, becoming part of Latin American folklore known throughout Mexico and the southwestern United States.
