Silent Music by EIMC Ensemble Basel 2021

This album is best listened to when it is played with low volume such that outside sounds can blend with it (as on the album). Headphones can be used for concentrated listening. Note that the sound level of these recordings is very low.

Silent music is organised sound that in a sense denies player and instrument. It wants to be part of our aural environment. One of the pioneers of this idea was John Cage.

Why would we want to play silent music? Because it blends easily with the sounds around us? Because it challenges our hearing? Do we think there is already too much loud music? Do we like to practice a different form of concentration? Could it be, that it stops our ego from wanting to be heard as loud as possible? That by doing so we become part of the environment?

Silent Music is the result of a workshop held at EIMC-2021, Freie Musikschule, Basel, 1-3 October 2021. Recorded live, 3 October 2021.
