Cyclic by Hominid

Cyclic was Originally composed for contemporary dance show “Commentary Of Dreaming” by Company Beck, that premiered at the 2025 Dunedin Festival of the arts using a custom sound system incorporating a siren speaker.



A deeply existential ambient work inspired by the astrological concept of Saturn Returns, it meditates on subconscious rites of passage and cyclical nature of life. Hominid describes it as “3am, smoke a cigarette or joint and stare at the night sky type Ambient” 


Cyclic Pt.1 was arranged out of various tape loop improvisations performed by HOMINID on a tascam portastudio and is heavily inspired by the compositions of Tim Hecker, William Basinski and the string arrangements of Jóhann Jóhannsson



Cyclic Pt.2 Is a downtempo electronica response to Pt.1, influenced heavily by the early work of Rival Consoles. The Drones and existentialism of Pt.1 are re contextualized with thick bass, dusty percussion and a looping vocal - “the planet Saturn takes 29 and a half years to get around the sun.”



On releasing these tracks Hominid reflects that “Its strange to finally share this music, I think of all the music I have made this release might be the most personal. These tracks actually predate Hominid as a project, the first developments for Commentary of Dreaming being around 2022. In a way this music is my own Saturn returns - I found a lot of confidence that I was lacking in my self as an artist working on music for that show, it felt like a moment of personal evolution”
