there’s an effigy that looks like me
floating above the wading pool
it’s stained with teenage blood
and charred remnants of an old high school
waits for the copper flood

a blinking red light starts calling numbers
I look at the cards I’ve been dealt
know my time’s a long way away
crawl back into my shell
I’ve been having trouble in bed
nights keep getting longer and longer
you spend a third of your life sleeping
if I chip it away will I get stronger?

patience short, cards folded
supplies are limited
and I’m awake all day and night
demand better answers for this
as if I’m tested and nothing’s shown up right
force me to face the light
