Hay Blackbird's legendary debut, self-titled album right here on Bandcamp! In October 2022, Howie Schwartz, Ray Finch, & Orion Boucher voyaged down from Bishop to meet Ryan Finch at Studio West Satellite in San Diego for 2.5 days of "smash-n-grab" style recording, smiling and playing full tilt, and at all hours, to capture a unique moment in time for the band. The expectation was to come away with 4 to 6 good tracks but, to our delight, the session produced an 11-track album. Sound seeds that floated magically upwind from Appalachia, sowed themselves in the fertile soils of the Owens Valley, in the high desert of California, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This album is the fruit of the wild harvest that those seeds produced, respectfully recombined with modern, local flavor and spice. We hope you enjoy it!

Howie Schwartz and Ray Finch came up with the idea for Hay Blackbird in 2021 after a couple of decades of playing Bluegrass and Old Time music around Eastern CA. Hay Blackbird covers the wide genre of stringband music from the mid 1800's to present. Hay Blackbird’s interpretation and delivery of Old Time music may be more progressive than some, but still reflects their deep respect for the roots.
