Bio:
Hair and Space Museum is the duo of Emily Pothast and David Golightly, who were also the co-founders of the cosmic rock band Midday Veil. The pair met in Seattle in 2007 and started playing music together soon after. Golightly is a classically trained pianist and composer whose studies in electronic music included Karlheinz Stockhausen’s summer courses in Kürten, Germany. Pothast was, at that time, a recent art school graduate who turned to music for reasons involving ritual and memory. The music they produce together often revolves around the interplay of Pothast’s powerful voice with Golightly’s vintage analog synthesizers — especially the Roland Juno-60 he’s had since he was a teenager. In 2019, the duo relocated from Seattle to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Pothast began work on a PhD, researching the reception history of ancient apocalyptic literature from a perspective grounded in media theory. Like the ancient apocalypses Pothast studies, Hair and Space Museum was born in a cultural milieu in which the influence of a violent, profit-driven imperialism often feels insurmountable. Their music approaches sound as a means of resonating with the structures of deep time and bridging unfathomable distances.
