I stare at the ceiling of my room, unable to fall asleep.

The only sound is the metallic sighing tones of the radiator
making my room uncomfortably hot.

I am alone.

Shrugging off my covers, I move to the window and slide it open with a gentle pull, allowing frigid night air to drift in and cool me down.

Looking through the opening, I survey the darkened shapes of downtown.

Dozens of apartments are across from my own.

The river, body blackened by night, separates me from them.

Thousands of people lie within those buildings, sleeping soundly.

Yet here I stand, awake, wanting to join them but unable to.

Amid thousands of people, I am alone.

Then, I hear it.

Ringing out from the river below. A drone. A voice.

It speaks to me.

It calls me.
