I slow down to a stop, my lungs burning from my haphazard sprint.

I take a moment to assess my surroundings again as I catch my breath, and to my horror it’s like I hadn’t moved at all.

The sights of the field remain as suffocatingly desolate as before.

My breaths stutter and catch in my throat as I start to cry.

I am but a pinprick in a great petri dish, isolated and singular.

Then from behind me, rumbling - the movement of earth.

I turn to see a glimmering form rising from the ground - a great mirrored obelisk.

I wipe tears from my face and approach it cautiously.

Drawing close, I can see my reflection cast upon its smooth surface – an animal that is familiar to me but simultaneously profane.

"What's the matter?"

My own voice suddenly breaks the silence.

It came from the obelisk - my reflection is speaking to me.

"What's the matter?"
