Across a dozen-odd albums, Great Earthquake AKA Noah Symons has proven himself to be a post-punk one-man-band force of nature.
The first single taken from Abstract Expression, 'Trauma and Impact' is a downbeat and detailed first-hand account of falling asleep at the wheel.
Follow-up single, the instrumental ‘Introducing the New’ finds Noah reflecting on his new environmental surrounds. Built around the signature sinewy Great Earthquake percussive backbone, the track slowly emerges, muted from a subterranean slumber. The tentative bass, keyboard and guitar parts gently reveal themselves as if to receive a new love, like tendrils moving slowly toward the warmth of the sun.
Recorded and mixed by Noah at home in Monbulk, Victoria the album explores deeply personal experiences but also allows space and time to reflect in between.
From fighting back after taking a lot of hits to conveying a disenchanted view of Christianity, Abstract Expression draws the listener into these personal tales and then allows space to get lost in the longer, hypnotic and deeply rhythmic instrumental jams interspersed throughout the album.
