Pale Blue from Pale Blue by Glen Whitehead

This piece is adapted from the soundtrack of a documentary film called Stitching Rites by my dear friend and colleague, the late poet, philosopher, film-maker Mary Jane Sullivan who passed away in 2021. We shared several adventures in the San Luis Valley in which this work is based while teaching my Sonic Landscapes class at UCCS with my colleague, Geography Professor Brandon Vogt. The sound bed is made from the head waters of the Rio Grande River with trumpet and Native American flute, melodies composed directly for the film.

Glen Whitehead, D.M.A. is a trumpet and ecoacoustic artist. He explores improvisational phenomena, and environmental collaboration between living cultures and the natural world. He has been featured on numerous recordings, residencies, and music festivals. Whitehead is a Professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs and Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
