Strange Spy by Giancarlo Tossani

Come spiega lo stesso musicista, «Strange Spy è l'anagramma di G.T. Synapser, ovvero la band con cui da anni, principalmente, propongo le mie idee musicali. Questa strana, bizzarra spia potremmo quindi considerarla una sorta di alter ego. Un insolito straniero che in una prospettiva musicale anti-romantica dialoga con gli espedienti della tecnologia musicale e le risorse dei menu, alle prese a volte con "Note che non sono le mie", per parafrasare il titolo del libro di Emmanuel Carrère».

Dopo ben tre album con i Synapser, che avevano reso la band una delle più prolifiche con il marchio Auand Records, con queste tracce Tossani rivela un approccio completamente diverso. Un po’ con l’intento di fare pratica con apparecchi e software che oggi dominano la scena, un po’ per provare a domare la macchina con elementi creativi che vengono fuori dalle falle della tecnologia stessa, parte alla ricerca delle possibilità offerte da circuiti e sistemi binari. Con pazienza e curiosità, il suo scopo è quello di mettere in primo piano proprio l’aspetto meno accattivante del dialogo uomo-macchina: non la perfezione e la linearità, ma l’inatteso. Sono gli imprevisti a diventare a loro volta uno spunto per l’improvvisazione. «È quello che generalmente caratterizza buona parte della mia produzione – aggiunge il pianista – di solito con buoni partner umani e qui invece con un partner che non ha un volto umano ma estremamente servizievole e compiacente». Ma un creativo come Tossani non avrebbe mai potuto omettere la componente umana: nel gioco rientrano anche composizioni vere e proprie, e brani con una parte rilevante di scrittura. Per rendere ancora più vivo lo scambio tra umano e digitale.

As the musician himself explains, "Strange Spy is the anagram of G.T. Synapser, the band with which for years, mainly, I propose my musical ideas. We could therefore consider this strange, bizarre spy a sort of alter ego. An unusual foreigner who in an anti-romantic musical perspective dialogues with the expedients of music technology and menu resources, sometimes dealing with "Notes that are not mine", to paraphrase the title of the book by Emmanuel Carrère ".
After three albums with Synapser, which had made the band one of the most prolific with the Auand Records brand, with these tracks Tossani reveals a completely different approach. A little with the intention of practicing with appliances and software that today dominate the scene, a bit to try to tame the machine with creative elements that come out of the flaws of the technology itself, partly in search of the possibilities offered by circuits and binary systems. With patience and curiosity his purpose is to put the less appealing aspect of man-machine dialogue in the foreground: not perfection and linearity, but the unexpected. The unforeseen circumstances in turn become a starting point for improvisation.
