Amongst Others by Guest Appearance
Guest Appearance is a Belgian music collective that first took shape as the duo Wio D’Hespeel and Jürgen De Blonde. The band was founded in 2023, following the breakup of their previous project de portables. Over the past two years, Jürgen and Wio recorded an incredible amount of material, which they are now in the process of shaping, finishing, and assembling.
Amongst Others is the first album to emerge from that work: a record that is strikingly diverse while still maintaining a strong sense of cohesion. Eleven songs that take you from pop (such as the sing-along opener “Lunar Rover” and the equally danceable yet dreamy “Rainbow Heartache Express”), through muscular indie rock (“The Dogs Are at It Again” and “Every Life Is a Potential Film”), rattling, intimate lo-fi songs (“Sublime” and “Plevier,” dedicated to Dutch lo-fi hero Plover), a lesson in “taking the climax out of post-rock – and putting the climate in” (“Hurry, Kain”), restrained ballads (“How and When and Why” and “Midnight Air”), and slow, Duyster-esque trips like “Don’t Hold On to It” and closing track “So Loooooooooooong.”
While finishing the album, the band suddenly doubled its lineup: brothers Lode and Wouter Vlaeminck (Tomàn, Raketkanon, Lo-Renings Aarsfluit Ensemble) joined Guest Appearance in December ’25. This not only resulted in an alarming breach of the dad-joke threshold during rehearsals, but is also already audible on Amongst Others: on half of the tracks, at least one Vlaeminck can be heard.
