Breaking News is drawn from the complete, albeit small, five-LP catalog of Paloma Records, a library music imprint founded by Paolo Zavallone, which Four Flies is bringing to light through a project aimed at restoring and rediscovering the maestro’s overlooked discography.

Produced in 1983, the album is a collection of electronic themes and musical backdrops crafted for television news broadcasts and reportage. By fusing innovative arrangements with a soundscape dominated by synthesizers, Zavallone perfectly captures the zeitgeist of early 80s media.

The tracks explore a range of moods, united by a retro-futuristic sonic palette that nods to contemporaries like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Some, such as “Cerimoniale”, “Preghiera laica”, and “Congresso cattolico”, are stately classical pieces rendered entirely on analog synthesizers, evoking the grandeur of a full symphony orchestra.
Others, including “Teulada”, “Ultime notizie”, “Dossier”, and “Cronaca nera”, with their driving rhythms and minimalist structures, create the ideal atmosphere for television news bulletins and in-depth reports.
