A DEFIANCE OF MORTALITY

Imagine a time before 1935 when a guitarist would show up for a gig – in a large dance band or radio studio orchestra, perhaps in a hot quartet on Chicago’s South Side or Fifty-Second Street -- take out their Epiphone or Gibson, find a pick, tune up, and that was all. No wires, pedals, or amplification. I’m not speaking of Django or Freddie Green, but of orchestral acoustic guitar playing that began with Eddie Lang and others, reaching a peak of expression with Carl Kress, Frank Victor, Dick McDonough, George Van Eps. It continues today in the playing of ninety-year old Marty Grosz (whom I saw earlier this month!) and his younger disciples, among whom is Fernando Montardit of Buenos Aires, whom I’m honored to have heard and met in the best way, across a table with Thai food in the middle.

In this “orchestral” style, the guitarist takes full responsibility for creating a density of harmonic and dynamic textures – not just single-string hornlike solos – balancing between melodic exposition and improvisation and keeping the rhythm and harmony going. Yes, there might have been piano, bass, and drums on the stand, but the guitarist was a swing Atlas, carrying the music on their shoulders.

Although Fernando is not yet as famous as he deserves to be, he has soul and he has studied. He told me, “I started to play eight years ago, when I heard Marty Grosz. Then when i discovered The Pioneers of Jazz Guitar, the Yazoo label compilation, I found the rest of the gang, Eddie Lang, Dick Mc Donough, Carl Kress, Nick Lucas. I didn´t have a good acoustic guitar at that time to play this style, so when i went to New Orleans for the first time in 2015, I got an old 1942 Gibson L7 (owned by Albanie Falletta, who called it Bessie). Then I learned many songs of that album -- marvelous duets and solos. It was a total challenge for me! And it still is now. A couple of years ago I started to dream about a solo album in that style, so it took time for me to be ready for this.”

He IS ready.

On this solo offering, Fernando pays homage to the great Ancestors by creating his own tapestries of sound. Hear how pretty he can be on Lang’s APRIL KISSES, which reminds me so much of Neapolitan music that the gallant suitor might play under the lady’s window in hopes of winning her favor. . . . and its cousin, A LITTLE LOVE, A LITTLE KISS – a musing rhapsody full of thoughtful spaces for breath. (Fernando understands the charm of rubato, the open-ended flow that makes instrumental music resemble deeply-felt authentic speech.) CHASIN’ A BUCK exemplifies his swing: it’s easy to hear a big band arrangement encapsulated in this assertive performance of Dick McDonough’s composition. His arrangement of SWEET EMMALINE has a delicious bounce -- a primer on swing acoustic guitar in this hallowed style, as he spells out the harmony and keeps the rhythm buoyant between melodic phrases. WARM BREEZES, aptly titled, is a bonus – an unrecorded Nick Lucas composition. And Fernando’s three originals, PEDRO, THE SOUP, and PANDEMIA IN BLUE, show him to be a creator of making simple memorable melodies, then embellishing them logically and warmly.

That last title, PANDEMIA IN BLUE, leads directly to current events, unusually relevant to this or any creative act in these oppressive times. I write these words on March 26, 2020, in the early stages of a global pandemic. Mortality is all around us. We can strive to defeat it: stay indoors, wash our hands, keep our distance, obscure our faces with masks. But I think the music Fernando and others create is a defiance of Death, which is no match for Beauty. For that, we thank young Fernando Montardit not only with our ears but with our hearts.

UN DESAFÍO DE MORTALIDAD

Imagine una época anterior a 1935 en la que un guitarrista se presentaría para un concierto, en una gran banda de baile u orquesta de estudio de radio, tal vez en un cuarteto caliente en el South Side de Chicago o en la calle 52, saque su Epiphone o Gibson, toma una púa, afina, y eso es todo. Sin cables, pedales o amplificación. No estoy hablando de Django o Freddie Green, sino de tocar la guitarra acústica orquestal que comenzó con Eddie Lang y otros, alcanzando un pico de expresión con Carl Kress, Frank Victor, Dick McDonough, George Van Eps. Continúa hoy interpretando a Marty Grosz, de noventa años (¡a quien vi a principios de este mes!) Y a sus discípulos más jóvenes, entre los que se encuentra Fernando Montardit de Buenos Aires, a quien me honra haber escuchado y conocido de la mejor manera. , al otro lado de una mesa con comida tailandesa en el medio.

En este estilo "orquestal", el guitarrista asume la plena responsabilidad de crear una densidad de texturas armónicas y dinámicas - no solo solos de una sola cuerda - equilibrando la exposición melódica y la improvisación y manteniendo el ritmo y la armonía. Sí, podría haber habido piano, bajo y batería en el escenario, pero el guitarrista era un Atlas de swing, llevando la música sobre sus hombros.

Aunque Fernando aún no es tan famoso como merece ser, tiene alma y ha estudiado. Me dijo: “Comencé a tocar hace ocho años, cuando escuché a Marty Grosz. Luego, cuando descubrí The Pioneers of Jazz Guitar, la compilación del sello Yazoo, encontré al resto de la pandilla, Eddie Lang, Dick Mc Donough, Carl Kress, Nick Lucas. No tenía una buena guitarra acústica en ese momento para tocar este estilo, así que cuando fui a Nueva Orleans por primera vez en 2015, obtuve una vieja Gibson L7 de 1942 (propiedad de Albanie Falletta, que la llamó Bessie). Luego aprendí muchas canciones de ese álbum: maravillosos duetos y solos. ¡Fue un desafío total para mí! Y todavía lo es ahora. En esta ofrenda en solitario, Fernando rinde homenaje a los grandes antepasados creando sus propios tapices de sonido. Escucha lo bonito que puede ser en APRIL KISSES de Lang, que me recuerda tanto a la música napolitana que el pretendiente galante podría tocar debajo de la ventana de la dama con la esperanza de ganar su favor. . . . y su primo, A LITTLE LOVE, A LITTLE KISS, una rapsodia reflexiva llena de espacios pensativos para respirar. (Fernando comprende el encanto del rubato, el flujo abierto que hace que la música instrumental se parezca a un discurso auténtico y profundamente sentido.) CHASIN 'A BUCK ejemplifica su swing: es fácil escuchar un arreglo de banda grande encapsulado en esta actuación asertiva de la composición de Dick McDonough . Su arreglo de SWEET EMMALINE tiene un ritmo delicioso: una introducción a la guitarra acústica swing en este estilo sagrado, ya que deletrea la armonía y mantiene el ritmo boyante entre las frases melódicas. WARM BREEZES, debidamente titulado, es bonus: una composición inédita de Nick Lucas. Y los tres originales de Fernando, PEDRO, THE SOUP y PANDEMIA IN BLUE, muestran que es un creador de hacer melodías simples y memorables, y luego las adorna de manera lógica y cálida.

Ese último título, PANDEMIA IN BLUE, conduce directamente a eventos actuales, inusualmente relevantes para este o cualquier acto creativo en estos tiempos opresivos. Escribo estas palabras el 26 de marzo de 2020, en las primeras etapas de una pandemia mundial. La mortalidad nos rodea. Podemos esforzarnos por derrotarla: permanecer en el interior, lavarnos las manos, mantener nuestra distancia, ocultar nuestras caras con máscaras. Pero creo que la música que crean Fernando y otros es un desafío a la muerte, que no es rival para la belleza. Por eso, agradecemos al joven Fernando Montardit no solo con nuestros oídos sino también con nuestros corazones.
