it's one in the morning
you're headed home from a new friend's house
they're so nice to have printed out directions for you to get home
before you even showed up to their house, in fact
"so you don't have to worry about looking at your phone while you're driving."
is what they said
it's weird...but you didn't want to be rude
so you're glancing down at these papers you can barely read in the dim black of night
you're driving down roads and highways you've never seen before
but then again...that's how it is going somewhere you never have before
the trees are closing in on your car
there's no one passing by on the other side of the road
what the hell? in a fleeting second, you pass underneath what looks like a scarecrow hanging from a tree, grey moss wrapped around its neck in a noose
in that moment, your car lurches forward
and begins to wobble and lean to the left
panicking, you pull over to the right side of the road, throwing on your hazards
stepping out of your car, you notice how windy it is. the scarecrow hundreds of feet behind is swaying in the wind, the moss is beginning to throw itself from the branches that creep around you and surround the highway like an organic tunnel
almost underneath where the scarecrow hangs, you notice barely-visible broken glass. it's spread all across both sides of the road, far too much to be from a single bottle or container. a shard must've punctured your tire. a few feet ahead of where the scarecrow was hung...the scarecrow must've been a distraction.
this was deliberate.
you get out of your car and check your tire
it's a deep gash
you start to dial your insurance provider's roadside assistance number
something in the distance catches your attention first
red lights
countless red lights bobbing in the distance
getting larger on an unseen horizon
