Review by Diego Schissi
How fortunate we are to have this new work by Emmanuel—an album that bears witness to a musical development I’ve had the privilege of observing throughout the years I’ve known him, and which surely has been maturing since his childhood in Formosa. These pieces speak of a long, sustained creative process, where we encounter a language that feels familiar yet enriched by Emmanuel’s unique and captivating compositional depth.
Drawing from rhythmic foundations (galopa, guarania) and the essential elements of música del litoral (lyricism, dance, instrumental virtuosity), this project achieves a musical construction that is both highly elaborate and deeply connected to its roots. You can hear the landscape, and you can see other sounds emerge. This music “is and is not”: tradition and innovation in a single gesture; the joy of movement along with the dramatic tension of new harmonies and atmospheres.
This duality also appears in the formal dimension: just when we seem to enter familiar structures, long-form developments unfold and continually surprise us.
I also want to highlight the interpretative strength of the album, since music rooted in tradition requires codes that no score can fully capture. These recordings embody those codes naturally, thanks to the extraordinary musicians involved.
To conclude, I celebrate this music that opens new pathways within a marvelous genre of Argentine music and undoubtedly leaves a mark—a new point of departure.
