Successfool by Elly Kellner
On Successfool Elly's humorous side is shown just as much as her shadow parts. Songs about a wicked father figure and an eating disorder are balanced out with annoyed chickens clucking at a cheating rooster and an ode to staying playful. In the song Successfool Elly questions whether she has to act like a fool in order to become successful. The album came about in a period when Elly had started to experiment with writing in her mother tongue Dutch (Netherlands), so it includes two songs in Dutch.

Een prettige vrolijk-met-een-tikje-melancholie stijl. Op haar debuutalbum klinkt Elly Kellner zowel droevig als vrolijk, maar de eigenzinnige Nederlandse singer-songwriter en mezzo-soprano kiest niet voor de bekende weg. ‘Succesfool’ is een uitstekende Nederlands-Engelse plaat voor liefhebbers van subtiel afwijkende folk. Elly heeft het hele album zelf opgenomen en geproduceerd. Ze begeleid zichzelf in alle nummers op gitaar. Op het hoesje van de cd verklapt ze haar geheim dat het gaat om een 4-string, wat een eigen geluid oplevert. Door de vele variatie in haar gitaarspel, is bovendien elk nummer anders en wordt het nergens eentonig. De CD is aan te bevelen voor liefhebbers van folk en melancholische luisterliedjes. Een indrukwekkend album. Ook een tikkie gewaagd, want lastig te labelen. Genre? Folk, roots, kleinkunst? Ze zingt zowel in het Engels als in het Nederlands. Ze heeft iets te vertellen, serieus, maar niet zonder humor. Al met al buitengewoon eigen én eigenzinnig; onvergelijkbaar. Knap! (Henk Hoogenstraaten)
