let all mortal flesh keep silence
and with fear and trembling stand
ponder nothing earthly minded
for with blessing in his hand
Christ our God to earth descended
our full homage to demand

how silently, how silently
the blessed gift is given
so God imparts to human hearts
the blessing of his heaven
no ear may hear his coming
but in this world of sin
where meek souls will receive him still
the dear Christ enters in

oh holy child of mary
descend to us we pray
cast out our sin and enter in
be born in us today
we hear the holy angels
their great glad tidings tell

rank on rank the host of heaven
spreads its vanguard on the way
as the light of light descendeth
from the realms of endless day
that the powers of hell may vanish
as the darkness clears away
