Eddie Condon occupies an unusual place in jazz history. A rhythm guitarist who never soloed and became less audible as the years progressed, Condon was not a great musician, arranger, composer or vocalist. In fact, on first glance, he often seemed to be the least important musician on stage, and yet in reality he was the catalyst for a great deal of exciting music. A fighter and propagandist for freewheeling jazz (as opposed to tightly arranged swing orchestras), Condon had a genius for gathering together complementary musicians, counting off perfect tempos and inspiring his players to jam at their very best.

Condon may not have taken any solos, but his spirit and joy are felt throughout this album (he is the unofficial leader of all sessions) and on every date in which he appeared. He was one of the most underrated behind-the-scenes giants of jazz.
