Esmerim Bicim Bicim is a Turkish traditional song popularised by, among others, famed Turkish singers, Ibrahim Tatlises and Izzet Altimese. This somewhat slower version was taught to Mark by his friend and fellow Australian reedman, Linsey Pollak, in the 1980s. Esmerim is a slow burner over which Kristiina provides a scat vocal in duet with Mark’s soprano sax.

Eastwinds began in 2014 when Mark Cain (reeds), Esfandiar Shahmir (ney) and Sanshi (didgeridoo) came together as a woodwind trio. We were then joined by Estonian singer, Kristiina Maalaps and today Eastwinds is a six-piece with broad influences: Estonian runo-song, classical Persian, Balkan, klezmer and contemporary jazz. All find expression in the band’s unique acoustic global sound.
