Zwielicht (entflammt) "Twilight (on fire)" is intended to be listened to without interruption. Separate tracks are provided to facilitate listening to shorter sections of the work.

Zwielicht (entflammt) was composed between 2021 and 2024 and is dedicated to organist Christof Pülsch, who provided me with very constructive advice throughout the creative process. The entire sound world of this composition originates from the organ. The electronics are used simultaneously on three different levels: first, organ sounds are processed in real time in various ways using a complex computer program that I developed over many years; second, I cut out many samples from recordings I had made with Christof Pülsch, which are stored in a sampler and which he plays via two additional manuals, quasi as additional registers. Many of these recordings were made with reduced wind pressure, resulting in pale, twilight-like sounds that create an unreal atmosphere when played alone or layered with ‘normal’ organ sounds; thirdly, some parts of the recordings were processed into playback parts that are played at certain points during the performance.

Zwielicht (entflammt) was premiered by Christof Pülsch on 12 January 2025 as the opening event of the FRAKZIONEN Festival at the Zionskirche in Bielefeld.

Rainer Bürck is a free-lance composer and pianist based in the South of Germany. As a composer he has been focussing on electroacoustic music in recent years, creating acousmatic works and works for various performers, including live electronics. His works have been performed and broadcast world-wide.

As a pianist, Rainer Bürck works in the field of contemporary music and improvisation. Currently his main emphasis is his trio TRIONYS with Rainer Bürck / piano & electronics, Günter Marx / violin & electronics and Martin Bürck / percussion & electronics.

Christof Pülsch (born in Bremerhaven in 1976) studied Protestant church music in Detmold, organ in Piteå (Sweden), and Protestant theology in Wuppertal. Since holding positions in Säter (Sweden) and in the Bielefeld church district, he has been church musician at the Zion Church Bethel in Bielefeld since 2006. At the Zion Church, he is responsible for a concert series and a festival for contemporary music, FRAKZIONEN. His repertoire on the organ ranges from Baroque to modern music, with a special focus on music from the 20th and 21st centuries.
