Eulogy from Invocation by DUENDE LIBRE

The final track on the album also holds the most personal meaning for me. Like “Chick”, this tune was written very quickly in the space of a few hours in the months after the sudden loss of a dear friend and mentor, Charles “Charley” Johnston (1948-2023). The months immediately after losing Charley were very difficult. At one point toward the end of the summer I hit rock bottom, and in the depths of my despair this song came to my rescue, like a lifeline tossed to a drowning sailor. Writing and performing “Eulogy” continue to play an important role as I learn how to accept and grieve this painful loss. This song is dedicated to Charley and everyone who’s lost a loved one.

DUENDE LIBRE celebrates the connections between jazz and music from Cuba, Brazil, and the Mediterranean. Their stewardship is a natural continuation of decades of dedicated apprenticeship with master musicians from around the world.
