The Secret

(c) 2004
I had seen 'em in the store, at least a dozen times,
They were always holding hands, standing in the checkout line.
They'd always say it's good to see you, when I'd meet them in the aisle,
Sometimes I thought they only came there, just to make somebody smile.
I assumed this old couple, must be newly weds,
So one day in line I asked him, it sure surprised me when he said.
We celebrated fifty years on June the seventeenth,
So I asked him what's your secret, he smiled and said these words to me.
Chorus
Live each day like today could be your last day together,
Always remember, you married your best friend.
Make time for conversation, protect and love what God has given,
You'll be forever blessed, if you'll give your best, then your love will never end.
He asked if I was married, as he glanced at my left hand,
I told him that I was, I just don't wear my wedding band
Then she said I'll bet she's pretty, you need to show her that you care,
'Cause you could wake up alone tomorrow and wish she was still there.
One summer evening my wife and I stopped at the store,
I saw him in the checkout line, she wasn't with him anymore.
I could see the hurt written on his face, as I recalled his words again,
As he turned to us to wave goodbye, I held the hand of my best friend.
