# About This Track: Reflect/Deflect

Dueling voices locked in an internal tug-of-war create the emotional backbone of "Reflect/Deflect," perhaps our most structurally ambitious track on the album. We originally conceived it as two separate songs until our producer suggested layering them against each other—mirroring the mental battle between confronting pain and running from it.

The orchestral elements shimmer with classical precision while distorted electronics grind against them, creating a deliberate dissonance that slowly resolves as the track progresses. Melanie's ethereal soprano represents reflection, while Josh's processed vocals embody deflection. Their intertwining creates that tension we all feel when healing—knowing we should face our wounds while desperately wanting to escape them.

"This track emerged during my worst weeks," shares Josh. "I'd literally bounce between journaling about my feelings for twenty minutes, then immediately diving into three hours of mindless gaming to escape those same feelings. The song lives in that contradiction."

When recording the string quartet, we deliberately positioned the musicians at opposite ends of the studio to create spatial tension, then gradually moved them closer as the song progressed toward resolution. The final glitch in the outro—that wasn't planned. The system crashed during our last take, but the broken sound captured exactly what we needed: imperfect reconciliation.

You might catch subtle melodic callbacks to "Glass Monuments" and "Empty Room Theory"—creating a musical conversation between denial and depression that finally opens toward acceptance. The bridge, with its stripped-back piano, marks the moment we realized healing isn't an either/or proposition. Sometimes protection is necessary; sometimes exposure is the only way forward.
