BECAUSE AGING IS A VICTORY.
When I was growing up, I rarely heard anything positive about aging. Maybe never.
Aging was what you did before you died. Old age was a curse, retirement was a mental graveyard, and being old meant being ugly and useless. (Does anyone else remember that face cream ad that stated: “I don't intend to grow old gracefully - I intend to fight it every step of the way”?)
Now that I'm here, though, I'm actively rebelling against the image of old age being a phase of invisibility and decline. Hell, I don't even want to call it “old age”. I'm calling it “my third age", after the Spanish expression "tercera edad", the third phase of one's life. And as a Gen Xer who thought we'd all get blown off the face of the planet by a nuclear bomb before the mid-1980s, I am celebrating making it this far and having so much further to go.
That's the concept behind “55!”: being “old” means being ready to do anything - rock out, fight back, say no, call out.
We're not done yet. Not by a long shot. Let's get ready to rock.
