Secret Album by David Garza

November 2003 I left DTLA to move back to Austin.
On the way east I stopped in Tornillo Tx at Sonic Ranch.
Tony the Duke Of Tornillo told me to stay as long as I wanted in his Grandfather's old room in the old hacienda nestled in 4,000 acres of pecan trees.
I wrote & recorded this "Secret Album" while on this rock & roll hejira.

Sneaking away to Valentine,Tx I stayed for a spell at the hideout of artist Boyd Elder.
I wrote & recorded "Au Revoir" on his 1870 piano that his ancestors brought in a horse drawn wagon from Ohio to West Tx.

The drums on "Lucky Feather" & "Halloween Freeze" & "Neva" were recorded in his back art studio shed.
While I would be banging away he would blowtorch metal from old car doors onto random junkyard debris.
Boyd loved the beats fast & loud like a "jungle drum" so the lyrics shouted out to "pounding on the Valentine floor -it's the thunder from Juarez- all the coolies want more".
I tried to kept time & feared for my life as random sparks exploded.

Boyd kept me up all night & mumbled encouragement.
He would always ask me to play "Zevon or Joni".

Back then Marfa was really still a secret.
We would drive in his 1971 Black BMW 30 miles from Valentine at 4 in the morning with the headlights off to see if there was "any trees worth shaking".

We would end up sitting outside the chilly gas station.
I would strum as he smoked endless cigarettes.
He told me "musicians don't know how to listen-that's what painters are for" - he had endless patience with the musical process.
As for art advice, in a low voice he would confide in me like sharing the secret of the Lost Ark of the Covenant to "get a damn pencil & draw cylinders & spheres".

It was on one of these nights turning into mornings I wrote "I'm All Un" like a confession to a dark priest -reflecting my lost state of heart at the time.

I drove back to Tornillo to process this Boyd vortex.
I wrote "Horrid" for my friend Gemma after hearing her voice for the first time in probably 4 years - she would have a way of saying I was "horrid" as an affectionate goodbye.
