Cautiously Optimistic is a suite of eleven original compositions--nine by David Borgo, and one each by Justin Grinnell and Alan Eicher--reflecting on the post-pandemic (endemic?) moment. The performances range from the rambunctious to the contemplative, featuring David Borgo on tenor and soprano saxophones, concert, bass, and Irish flutes, alto clarinet, and wind synthesizer. The phenomenally creative rhythm section includes Alan Eicher on piano, Peter Sprague guesting on guitars, Justin Grinnell on acoustic bass, and Julien Cantelm on drum set. David Borgo is a saxophonist specializing in original modern jazz and improvisation. He has a PhD in ethnomusicology and is a Professor of Music at the University of California San Diego. David has toured extensively, including performances in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North, Central, and South America, and has released eleven CDs and one DVD of original music on a variety of labels.
