Fishermen’s Tales
©Dave Gibb 2009 PRS/MCPS
I stood at the harbour and watched them embark
Then sail away into the waves
And I wondered what stories they’d care to bring back
Should they ever get back home again
It must be amazing, I thought to myself
To be going where they were to go
I was young and naive and I hadn’t been long
In this world so what did I know?
When the fishing fleet came heavy laden and full
With the harvest they’d dragged from the deep
The smiles of the fishermen shone bright and clear
They were home safe and sound from the sea
The harbour packed tight boats were moored side by side
I believed it would always be so
I was young and naive and I hadn’t been long
In this world so what did I know?
They told me they’d sailed o’er the oceans and sailed o’er the main
Sailed ‘round the world then sailed back again
They’d seen mermaids and monsters – what tales they could tell
And they barely escaped from the fires of hell
They barely escaped from the fires of hell
I’d stand at the door of a harbourside bar
And hear them all drinking inside
You could feel them relax in the smoke and the booze
And slowly the volume would rise
The swearing and laughing would work itself up to
An unrecognisable roar
I was young and naive and I hadn’t been long
In this world so what did I know?
They told me ….
Now the port is deserted, the harbour is dead
And the bar is all shuttered and closed
The boats have all gone and they say that the quayside
Is haunted by fishermen’s ghosts
The speed of the change breaks your heart but remember
It doesn’t seem so long ago
WhenI was young and naive and I hadn’t been long
In this world so what did I know?
They told me ….
